Fashion photography has never been solely about capturing clothing, it’s a fine art, a narrative journey, a form of storytelling that captivates, enchants, and radiates glamour. In the years since the turn of the millennium, we’ve witnessed the rise of a new generation of fashion photographers who masterfully articulate style, culture, and sartorial communities.
Yet “fashion photography” and “fashion photographer” are fluid terms, these artists look beyond the boundaries of high fashion and fine art. When Tyler Mitchell was asked by Vogue to define his genre whether fashion, documentary, art, or something else—he responded without hesitation: “I’m a concerned photographer.” Meanwhile, Campbell Addy, one of the most sought-after photographers working today, whose subjects range from Kendall Jenner to Tyler, the Creator, weaves the spirit of Black creativity into candid portraiture that explores broader themes of identity, intimacy, and art. Nadia Lee Cohen has crafted a style of cinematic, surrealist grandeur, with a focus on beauty and strong characters that has become a genre all its own.
Below, we highlight just a few of the fashion photographers of this era who are documenting and redefining style as we know it—from emerging talents to established icons.
Nadine Ijewere
This trailblazing photographer made history as the first woman of color to shoot a Vogue cover in the magazine’s global history. Nadine Ijewere’s work possesses a composed, painterly quality, shining through in her exploration of non-traditional beauty ideals. Born in southeast London, she has worked with designers from Dior to Louis Vuitton and numerous magazines. In 2021, she published her debut book, Our Own Selves, which challenges industry beauty standards through captivating, inquisitive portraiture.
Tyler Mitchell
“For so long, Black people have been treated as objects,” Tyler Mitchell told Vogue when he photographed Beyoncé for the magazine’s September 2018 issue. “We’ve been objectified physically, sexually, emotionally. Through my work, I aim to revitalize and elevate the Black body.” At the time, Mitchell was 23, making him one of the youngest photographers to shoot a Vogue cover. He also became the first African American photographer to do so in the magazine’s then 125-year history.
Raised in the Atlanta suburbs, and influenced by Spike Jonze’s early skate videos and YouTube, Mitchell has developed a curious and electrifying perspective on the world. He has shot A$AP Rocky for a Vogue cover, made his New York exhibition debut at Gagosian, and photographed subjects from Ayo Edebiri to Mrs. Miuccia Prada.
Campbell Addy
British-Ghanaian photographer Campbell Addy, based in London, has risen to become one of the most in-demand in his field. Drawing inspiration from his diverse upbringing, he has developed a sharp, striking photographic style. In 2022, he released his acclaimed first monograph, Feeling Seen, and in 2023, launched his major solo exhibition, which explored his roots and inspirations. Throughout his career, he has regularly contributed to Vogue and photographed figures such as Naomi Campbell, Beyoncé, Meghan Markle, Azealia Banks, and Edward Enninful. His fashion photography is driven by themes of empowerment, belonging, and diverse beauty.
Chloe Horseman
Chloe Horseman is a fashion photographer focused on capturing the most tender, human moments. Born in Georgia and based between Los Angeles and New York, she works regularly with Vogue, as well as brands like Proenza Schouler, Collina Strada, and Calvin Klein, photographing subjects from Laufey to Uma Thurman. Her first self-published book, Outtakes (2019), is a vibrant, intimate exploration of her life and the development of her signature style.
Quil Lemons
Based in Brooklyn and born in South Philadelphia, Quil Lemons has developed a powerful visual language that challenges notions of masculinity, celebrates Black queer identity, and draws on themes of community and belonging. His 2017 series Glitterboy saw Lemons adorn Black men with glitter, creating a stunning body of work that confronts stereotypes through beauty, while his 2018 project Purple meditated on the Black family portrait. In 2021, he became the youngest photographer to create the lead image for a Vanity Fair cover. He has shot Spike Lee, Billie Eilish, Zendaya, and more. In 2023, expanding beyond photography, Lemons launched a capsule collection with Sky High Farm Workwear titled Farm Boys Do It Better. His fashion photography serves as both a portal and a mirror, reveling in fashion fantasies while questioning who gets to live them.
Nadia Lee Cohen
Cinematic and exquisitely glamorous, Nadia Lee Cohen has crafted an era-defining visual language that has captivated figures from Kim Kardashian to Saint Laurent. Her work challenges conventional beauty standards with uncanny imagery, creating fictional, dreamlike personas and scenes. Born in Essex, she draws deep inspiration from nostalgic British and American cinema, as well as unexpected objects and memorabilia like name tags or drive-thrus. Alongside Kardashian, she has photographed Rihanna, Lana Del Rey, Pamela Anderson, and Sophia Loren, and worked on campaigns for Balenciaga, Gucci, and others. Her book Women has become a cult classic of the new era.
Jamie Hawkesworth
British photographer Jamie Hawkesworth is known for his poetic portrayals which are intimate, honest, occasionally humorous, but always deeply human. For Vogue, he has shot Erykah Badu, Emma Corrin, and Saoirse Ronan, among many others, creating emotive fashion spreads. Earlier this year, he debuted his first short film, Marmalade: A love letter to his grandfather and his memories as a messenger boy for the Air Raid Patrol during World War Two’s Blitz. Whether exploring the world of fashion or the British landscape, Hawkesworth maintains a delicate, observant
Hugo Comte
The French photographer’s career skyrocketed after shooting Dua Lipa’s highly saturated, sharp album cover for Future Nostalgia. He has since worked with Vogue and on campaigns for Bulgari, Helmut Lang, and Heaven by Marc Jacobs. His distinct style characterized by razor-sharp edges, bold tones, and deep dimensionality has quickly become recognizable. Comte’s debut film, Purring Metal, ambitiously weaves together the lives of six women, transcending themes of art, power, and sex.
Jack Bridgland
British photographer and creative director Jack Bridgland is known for his surrealist, offbeat, hypnotic approach to image-making—featuring oversize lighting, ’90s iconography, and energetic movement. He has worked with Jean Paul Gaultier, Supreme, and Diesel, and shot covers featuring Travis Scott, Robert Pattinson, and Kim Kardashian. His fashion photography has helped make bold, brash color palettes enduringly popular.
Sharna Osborne
Sharna Osborne’s aesthetic thrives in the lo-fi, drawing on DIY sensibilities and the glitchy feel of ’90s and ’00s films to create alluring scenes. She regularly collaborates with Martine Rose on trippy video vignettes and has worked with Miu Miu, Sinead O’Dwyer, and Acne Studios, as well as photographing Gabbriette, Charli XCX, and Irina Shayk.
Rafael Pavarotti
Rafael Pavarotti’s rich, sumptuous visual narratives are deeply rooted in his upbringing in Brazil where, as a young man, his friends pooled money to buy film for him to shoot around local beaches. With a focus on bold compositions and thorough research, Pavarotti’s work seeks to address the underrepresentation of Black voices in fashion and challenge long-held historical narratives. He has often collaborated with stylist Ibrahim Kamara on striking fashion editorials and has photographed Tyla, Beyoncé, numerous supermodels, and Bad Bunny for multiple international editions of Vogue.
These 11 photographers are more than just image-makers—they are storytellers, visionaries, and cultural architects. Through their unique lenses, they challenge conventions, celebrate diversity, and reimagine what fashion photography can be. By blending art, narrative, and social commentary, they have not only documented style but reshaped our understanding of it, proving that fashion photography is a powerful medium for reflecting and influencing the world around us. As they continue to evolve and create, their work will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on the industry and beyond, inspiring future generations to see style and the world through fresh, unfiltered eyes.
