I’ve been visiting Lake Powell for many years now, and ever since getting married three years ago, it’s become a yearly summer tradition with my new family. Every trip feels like a favorite escape — peaceful, breathtaking, and completely unique. Few places in the world compare to Lake Powell, nestled between dramatic red-rock canyons that seem to stretch forever.

The Changing Lake

In recent years, there’s been a lot of talk about the lake’s receding water levels — people wondering if it’s drying up, whether it’s safe to visit, and what’s happening with the marinas. I was curious myself. But when I arrived, I was relieved and amazed — Lake Powell is still spectacular. Though some beaches have changed, the lake remains as stunning and alive as ever.
Driving down from the parking lot toward the docks was surreal. The marina shimmered through the red canyon walls, revealing just how much the water had dropped. It was a powerful reminder of nature’s scale and resilience.

A Little History

Lake Powell was formed when the Glen Canyon Dam flooded the Glen Canyon area. It’s named after John Wesley Powell, a Civil War veteran and explorer who navigated the Colorado River in 1869. Most of the lake lies in southern Utah, with a small section crossing into northern Arizona.
Due to ongoing drought, the reservoir has seen significant water loss, even dropping below its target elevation of 3,500 feet — a level important for hydropower generation. Thankfully, it’s now just above that mark, and everyone hopes it continues to rise. Interestingly, the last time Lake Powell was completely full was back in 1999.

Our Lake Adventure

Once we found the perfect spot to anchor our houseboat, the fun began. We spent hours on the water — boating, sightseeing, and surfing — and despite lower water levels, the scenery was breathtaking. The water was cool enough to refresh us in the 100-degree heat but still comfortable for swimming.
Food is always a highlight of our trips. My husband’s daughter had everything prepped and labeled in bins by day, making mealtime effortless. We all shared the cooking duties and costs, and as always, everything tasted even better out on the lake.

Days on the Water

Our days were filled with games, kayaking, waverunner rides, hikes, long chats, and lazy naps. At night, we set up a blow-up movie screen on top of the houseboat and watched films under the stars — one of our favorite Powell traditions. My husband made his famous caramel corn (dangerously addictive!) while we settled in for movies and laughter.
This trip was mostly adults, aside from our seven-month-old granddaughter, which made it feel calmer and more relaxed. When the kids join, the energy is completely different — sand sculpture contests, endless games, and happy chaos. But honestly, the quieter pace this time was perfect. I needed it.

If you ever have the chance to visit Lake Powell, don’t pass it up. The towering red cliffs, glassy water, and sense of vastness make it one of the most awe-inspiring places in the United States. Whether you’re craving adventure or peace, this is the spot to find both.
